A fantastic all purpose wood chipper and shredder! The Dirty Hand Tools Wood Chipper Shredder is heavy duty and portable with enough muscle to chip 3″ branches and shred up to half-inch thick yard waste and reduce it to 1/20th of its original volume. This model features a 196cc Kohler OHV engine. The heat-treated, hardened steel chipper knives, flails and hammers are durable and stay sharper longer. Comes with built-handles and large 14″ wheels for easy maneuvering. Includes a 3 bushel capacity debris chute and is ideal for keeping projects clean and organized.
This is one tough machine. Unlike the previous review, I “looked” all around my machine to familiarize my self with it. Oil ports on both sides. I used a long flexible funnel with no problem. This machine is a monster. Branches nearly as wide as the shoot were eaten alive. The top shredder is unbelievable. If you load it with to much mulch you will stop the air flow and will need to clear it carefully. I had a 30x30x5 area of brush to clear from my pruned tree, and did it in 3 hours. GREAT MACHINE
Works great….does exactly what it supposed to.
I have a couple of acres of cedar and scrub to clear, and this machine is perfect for the job. I compared it to a machine priced $300 more and am extremely satisfied with performance. If the branch fits in the chute, this machine will turn it into a pile of wood chips in seconds. I had no problem locating oil dipsticks on both left and right sides of the engine.
I got this unit after comparing several different Chipper Shredders. The Easy answer is that IT WORKS! Chips branches as advertised and as long as you do not try to feed it material that is too large, the engine runs strong. The shredder hopper makes quick work of leaves and small twigs. If you are on the fence, this machine does what it says it will do hands down. My only complaint so far is that the draw bar is too short. Yes you can tow it with a riding mower but don’t plan on making much of a turn. Then you have to unhook it to really use it. I hope DHT offers a longer bar soon!
The machine is well made, it has eaten everything I have thrown at it. The only flaw is the bag, the draw string doesnt keep it firmly attached and the bags zipper has come apart three times while grinding. Other than that I do reccomend it, am glad I choose it.
This chipper exceeded my expectations. I own a landscaping business and i bought this chipper for light duty, mostly to condense my dump pile at home. We ended up using the chipper to help on a job sub contracting for an arborist for 2 days. Long story short we chipped 4000 lbs of pine tree branches ( 2 full size truck loads) branches 1-3 inches and the chipper took everything we could feed it. Yes, its a pain to assemble.. But it is a real hard working piece of equipment. I most definitely want to try more DHT products!
Works very well on branches up to 2.5 inches. Makes quick work of limbs. Very noisy. Starts first pull. Leave chute cover loose or it will break.

An amazing machine, and the help and support from the Dirty Hands team has been second to none. I used it to chip downed branches and tree trimmings and it kept running and chipped branches almost as wide as the chute in a few hours. A must have for a backyard with trees and brush.

Great machine. had a few issues in the beginning with bolts backing out of shredder hammers. New bolts with locktite and all is great.

Nice machine. Put it together today, found the Discharge Flange and the Support rod missing. I guess I will have to order and pay for this one. Hope this lasts longer than the The parts that was suppose to be there.

I am very pleased with my machine. It does the job it is designed to do.The only problem I have had is with the zipper on the bag, One of the teeth broke so I can not zip it all the way up. I had used it 3 times when it broke. I have a blower-vac that also has a bag that uses a plastic zipper. The difference it has large teeth instead of the small ones that you use. I have not had any problems with it and have used it to pick up leaves for 3 seasons. Over all still very pleased with your product.

Bought this three days ago for my christmas present. Machine works perfectly. My only complaint is the collection bag. zipper broke in the first hour and it looks like the its coming apart at the seams. Great chipper terrible collection bag

Does a good job on dried branches, OK on green branches, and not good on stringy items like palm fronds (as expected). Would give it 5 stars, if the zipper on the bag didn’t fail after 4 uses (-1), and I can’t find a replacement bag to order on the Web site (-1)
Please contact our customer service team at 1-877-487-8275 and they will be able to assist you with your collection bag! Thank you -DHT

I purchased this chipper from my local Lowe’s store .after comparing many others brands. The unit I bought had been damaged in shipment and was discounted. I called the factory to get the parts I needed, they were friendly, professional and took care of me immediately. Could not have had a better experience. The unit is built like a tank and exceeds my expectations. Hats off to a great team and a better product.

Assembly is fairly simple, all metal seems thick and durable, machine is pretty heavy, oil fill is a little tough but I rigged a small hose to my funnel and made filling simple.
I have about ten years of brush and branches built up in a massive pile and finally started to dig in today. As of now the machine has about 3 hours on it and I’m happy with the performance, I must of filled the bag 10-12 times and used the mulch around trees.
I was a little worried about the rubber chute deflector since a few people stated chips were ripping through it, but had no problems (of coarse only 3 hours on machine to judge). If the chute does rip (seems pretty durable), I plan to line it with sheet aluminum.
While I can’t comment on long term durability and reliability yet I’m very happy with this chipper/shredder now. I looked to rent a machine but it was $300 per day, and no way I could get through all my brush in a day so for a couple hundred more better to just buy my own with a warranty.
I plan to run it a few more hours and change the oil (manual states change after first 5 hours), and check bolts for tightness.
DHT seems to have a good product at a decent price, very happy so far!

Get to know this machine and you will have no trouble. Easy to assemble, At first glance, it looks like adding oil will be an issue, but look on the other side of the engine – there are two places to add oil. When I first started the engine (first use), it ran a few minutes and cut off – several times. I started it and let it run at idle for about 10-15 minutes, and haven’t had a problem since. The chipper performs as advertised – I chipped 3 inch limbs with no problem. I doubt you will find a better chipper for the price.

So far the chipper has been running great. The only problem are the thin plastic wheels. One completely fell apart and there is no way to order a replacement part. I have submitted a warranty claim and we shall see how quickly they respond. Wheel aside, the chipper works great and only stalled out when I was trying to process a 3in branch which was fairly long. It processes the material whether is dry or green. It makes great mulch and is great on fuel. I ran it for probably 2 hours processing material and it went through a tank of gas. I like this machine because as you feed the material you can pull back on it to prevent the motor from stalling. I have seen cheaper ones via youtube where it violently sucks the wood in which then ultimately stalls the engine. Don’t get me wrong this machine will pull in the branch however you have the ability to control the feed by pulling back.
I’d also like to mention it process very thin green material, such as vines or the tops of tree’s really well. I have read on other chippers that it gets stringy and clogs up the blade, that is not the case for this chipper. Its well worth the money.
This is a follow-up to my initial review a month ago. I must have 20-30 hrs on the machine now, I’ve processed an enormous amount of brush, sticks, branches, etc. The machine claims 3” branches, but I’ve found it processes closer to 4″ or whatever fits down the tube with no problem. I’ve fed it many 3″+ branches and small trees 20′,30’+ long, as long as you feed them with an in and out motion the machine processes them no problem. I’ve processed tons of leaves, twigs, pine needles and droppings through the hopper also..have yourself a feeding stick to work it through the hopper and don’t overload and it’ll process no problem. I’m literally transforming my yard one section at a time, and everything gets used since all the mulch gets put back in the section for a nice clean look under the trees.
Here’s a couple tips for use I’ve noticed; Don’t overload or force anything and the machine will process just about anything a typical homeowner need it to. Certain types of soft twiggy trees or branches can clog the chute if you have a ton of them, so listen for sound that suggests clogging and alternate with harder deadwood rather than all soft stuff at once to reduce any clogs. When processing piles of dry leaves, don’t let the engine cooling intake get covered, wipe it off soon as you see leaves sticking to the front.
Weak points; I’ve found the weak points to be some of the external parts of the machine that can probably be easily rectified by DHT in updated models. As I stated in My first review, I think the plastic frame wheels are a weak point on a very heavy machine, if one cracks it’ll be very difficult to use or transport the chipper…I think DHT should go with steel framed wheels in the future. The rubber chute needs to be sheet metal lined or metal all together, although it is fairly thick, I have a hole where a chip blew through. The bag needs to be much more heavy duty, the zipper has begun to give me problems although I can still get it zipped with some effort, and it is now ripping in a few sections, including one loop that ripped off that holds it to the metal rod….fortunately the rep at DHT is sending me a new bag under warranty in a few days…customer service was fast to get back to me! One other tip, make sure the machine is 100% clear before shutting down, since the engine and cutters spin together if a piece of branch gets wedged in the cutters it will not let you spin the engine to start….don’t yank on the pull cord! Use a stick to jostle the wedge loose down the hopper or if it’s really bound take the hopper or branch feed tube off and free it that way.
To wrap this long-winded review up I am very satisfied with the DHT chipper at this point and don’t think you can get a better one for the money. I’ve found any negatives to be minor, and customer service was fast about sending a new bag under warranty. Common sense will prevent most clogs. During inspection of the machine every other use or so I haven’t found any loose bolts or other problems. Oil changes are made easier if you get the chipper up on cinder blocks so a drain pan can fit under the machine better.
Well i hope I covered it all!! Good chipper, good price, definitely recommend the DHT chipper!

I bought this unit over the summer and used it a few times. Worked great! Put it to the test yesterday chipping branches approx 3 ” diameter and also shredded some smaller branches and leaves. Still working GREAT!!! I am very happy with the machine. Wish there was a parts list on this site though.
Works great. Takes oak and ash without a problem. Starts very easy. Have looked at a lot of them and this one was the best value for the price.
Lots of five star reviews. Add another one. Buy this machine.
This little machine is a BEAST! We have three acres of heavily wooded land of hardwoods with lots of dead fall that has been piling up, not to mention the leaves!! We have had absolutely no problem chipping branches 3+ inches, just don’t force it. We alternate between chipping dead fall and shredding a seasons worth of leaves. My only suggestion would be to create a discharge shoot accessory for this unit. It would be great to be able to continually run the chipper without having to dump the bag, but rather chip into a bin or trailer. Other that that, no complaints at all. Easy to assemble and started on the first pull. Chose this unit because of my satisfaction with my DHT log splitter, which I’ve run pretty heavily for the past 5 seasons.
Had my DHT chipper for a few years now, and it still works perfect.
